Graham Aker says he will surpass even Ashura in episode 18 of Mobile Suit Gundam 00’s first season, “The Aim of Malice.” He pilots his custom Union Flag against Johann Trinity’s Gundam Throne Eins. The English wording is an editorial translation.
Who is Graham fighting?
Graham intercepts Johann Trinity in the Gundam Throne Eins. Earlier in the episode, the Trinity team’s actions have already hurt civilians. The encounter feels different from Graham’s earlier clashes with Gundams, which were driven in part by his fascination with their capabilities.
Earlier in Episode 18, Graham visits Howard Mason’s grave with Daryl and vows to defeat a Gundam in a Flag. His decision to close the distance against the Throne Eins puts that promise to the test.
Why he says “today”
Graham acknowledges the difference in performance before turning the sentence toward himself. “Today” gives the boast urgency. Invoking Ashura, a figure associated with battle, conveys the anger he brings into the fight and how much he is demanding of himself.
Graham forces the fight into close quarters, and the Throne Eins loses an arm. Pay attention to the moment he closes the distance. His timing briefly matters more than the performance gap he has just acknowledged.
Is this the GN Flag?
Episode 18 features Graham’s custom Union Flag. The GN Flag is the later Custom II, while Over Flag is a separate designation. The official Gundam Versus unit guide also uses the Ashura line as an attack name for Graham’s custom Flag.
