Miorine Rembran says “Suisei tte okatai no ne” to Suletta Mercury near the end of episode 1 of The Witch from Mercury, “The Witch and the Bride.” Suletta has won the duel with Guel and is surprised to learn what that means for Miorine’s engagement.

“Mercury is rather old-fashioned, isn’t it?” is an explanatory translation of the line. This article identifies the scene, explains okatai, and separates what the conversation shows from things it does not establish about Mercury. Episode 1 spoilers follow; we do not present our English wording as a verified official subtitle or dub transcript.

Which episode contains Miorine’s “old-fashioned” line?

It is episode 1, after Suletta’s duel with Guel at Asticassia School of Technology. The result does more than settle a contest: it transfers the position connected to Miorine’s engagement to Suletta, who has not understood the full stakes.

Suletta responds by pointing out that she is a girl. Miorine’s remark about Mercury, followed by her assurance that it is perfectly acceptable here, answers that specific surprise. Miorine does not treat the fact that they are both girls as an automatic objection to the engagement.

What does “okatai” mean here?

The word does not describe physical hardness in this exchange. Applied to attitudes, it can suggest stiffness, conservatism or an unwillingness to depart from convention. Miorine lightly frames Suletta’s reaction in terms of the place she comes from.

The following phrase, kocchi ja zenzen ari yo, helps locate the meaning. Colloquial ari means something like acceptable or a possibility, rather than merely “existing.” Miorine is answering the assumption behind Suletta’s objection.

That is different from a legal briefing about Mercury. The brief conversation does not establish every resident’s beliefs or the details of marriage law. Avoid turning a character’s quick remark into an unsupported statement about a whole society.

Why does winning a duel lead to an engagement?

The school’s arrangement connects the winner’s position to being Miorine’s fiancé. That is why Suletta’s victory changes their relationship before either has had time to understand the other well. A newcomer’s first duel suddenly carries a personal consequence.

For Miorine, the arrangement also raises the question of how much control she has over her own future. The engagement cannot be understood only as an uncomplicated romantic choice; her father and the surrounding power structure matter too.

The line works as an opening to the pair’s story rather than proof that every later feeling is already settled. Suletta’s flustered surprise and Miorine’s casual confidence create a striking difference in tone. Their relationship still has room to develop beyond this first exchange.

Japanese spelling and English translation

This guide uses 水星ってお堅いのね, the spelling also used in COSPA’s licensed quotation T-shirt name. Spoken Japanese does not display kanji, so searches may show alternative written forms of okatai. Check the speaker, episode and scene before assuming an alternate spelling belongs to another line.

“Old-fashioned” communicates the social meaning, but without context an English reader might think Miorine means technology or clothing. Explain that she is responding to Suletta’s reaction to their engagement. This makes the meaning clearer without asserting that our phrase is the only authorized translation.

Merchandise with the actual quote: COSPA T-shirt

COSPA’s Miorine “Suisei tte okatai no ne” T-shirt uses the quotation itself. The Amazon Japan link below is for ASH, size L. Check the color and size before ordering; another Miorine slogan or another size is not automatically the same listing.

We have not worn or tested this shirt. Use the retailer’s measurements rather than treating this introduction as a fit or durability review. Amazon was accepting orders for ASH/L at our check. The Rakuten listing supplying the permitted advertising photo was sold out, so its link is for listing/restock comparison; its reissue wording does not describe Amazon’s dispatch terms.

For a character display: Figure-rise Standard Miorine

If you prefer displaying the character to wearing the line, Figure-rise Standard Miorine Rembran is a different kind of related item. It depicts Miorine in her school uniform and requires assembly. It is not a finished figure and is not sold as a quotation-printed item.

The distinction is useful: a Suletta or Aerial product should not be labeled a Miorine figure simply because they share a story. The card below identifies Miorine herself.
